View Full Version : What do you think of these "ODN" looks?

Since the forum style needs to be updated due to many forum updates (which I've not yet done as I was waiting for the big one due out in a few months), instead of simply purchasing the same skin we use now, I thought that perhaps a new skin may be in order. And since the community is helping ease the burden of cost of ODN lately, I thought it only fair for the community to give input on some of the possible styles that may be considered as being the new default.

You already are familiar with the current style. But here are a few others, let me know what you think.

*NOTE* None of the styles are using vbAdvanced (which is what we use for our home page...but all of them are compatible with it and we'll definitely keep using vba as our content management system). So when you view these styles, you are viewing the forum home page (not the site home page). Also keep in mind, that some of the styles need to be customized to ODN (which I can and will do, just as I've done w/ all our past styles). You are seeing just the 'bare bones' of the following styles...

Feel free to click on the buttons, links and threads to see what it looks like inside the forum, and inside the threads.

Big Red (http://vbskinworks.com/forum/index.php?styleid=243) I think it has a lot of potential.

BackSlash (http://vbskinworks.com/forum/index.php?styleid=257) A neon blue, "tech" style

360 (http://vbskinworks.com/forum/index.php?styleid=251) Will take some work to customize it from the Xbox look to an ODN look, but I've seen other sites do this very, very well. Obviously, we'd use none of the graphics taken from the gaming console, and we'd replace them with more appropriate graphics.

Grunged (http://vbskinworks.com/forum/index.php?styleid=333) Somewhat similar to our current style, but with some "edge".

Hexcell (http://vbskinworks.com/forum/index.php?styleid=335) Also fairly similar to our current.

Ogenzen (http://vbskinworks.com/forum/index.php?styleid=317) Orange-black theme. May be too similar to another site.

OnlyDev (http://vbskinworks.com/forum/?styleid=344) Another style similar to our own.

ProWeb (http://vbskinworks.com/forum/index.php?styleid=346) Sort of a neutral toned style

Pod (http://vbskinworks.com/forum/index.php?styleid=322) A "tech" looking style

Soness (http://vbskinworks.com/forum/index.php?styleid=359) A nice gray scale style.

Can we have a different style every week?

J/K. They're all nice - it's what's inside that counts.

You do realize...that's what ugly people say...right?

j/k ;)

I vote for one of the blue/white/gray themes. ODN has had a color scheme of that basic type as long as I remember.

I liked "Big Red" the best.

Yeah, it just reeks of "debate here" doesn't it? hehe

I like the current style, personally; every time there's a change, it takes me some time to adjust. But that's just me. If there must be change, I'd prefer something subtle - one of the greys or blues, but nothing neon bright.

Anything that is easy on tired old eyes will do for me. White backcloth to post boxes are a personal preference.

Big Red - not crazy about - I believe 'reds' bring negativity.

Blackslash and 360 - look more like gaming site skins

Grunged - I like that one

Hexcell - looks like a skin some news site would use.

Ogenzen - no....ugly.

OnlyDev - nope...BORING!

ProWeb - there's that orange again....yuck!

Pod - sort of like it

Soneness - nope

I'm wondering the purpose of needing a new skin? I rather like what we have now.

I like the the yellow and blue combination we have here. I think 'decorating' the site with too much detracts from the purpose of the forum. As much time as people spend here....we need to keep with something easy on the eyes, imo.

We don't need a new skin, but the current one needs to be updated if we stick with it...and the cost of doing so is the same as buying a brand new one.

You know the precedent that the government can control all broadcast media for censorship originated with FDR's desire to crush a preist's broadcasts?

Anyhow, why the need to update? Can't we be an old-timey board?

No. I like to keep up with the times when it comes to technology.

okay......I like...BigRed and BackSlash....and I could live with Pod and Soneness. The others, I'm not thrilled about

I liked Hexcell, OnlyDev and Soness. The rest were either too flashy (e.g. 360) or too dark (e.g. BigRed).

For a debate forum, I tend to favour skins which look neat and professional rather than gamerboyish or overly "cool". I.e., the type of skins Syl calls "boring". ;)

Pretty sweet.

BackSlash (http://vbskinworks.com/forum/index.php?styleid=257) A neon blue, "tech" style

Another good one.

No.

Grunged (http://vbskinworks.com/forum/index.php?styleid=333) Somewhat similar to our current style, but with some "edge".

Not that great.

Hexcell (http://vbskinworks.com/forum/index.php?styleid=335) Also fairly similar to our current.

Nah, not that good.

Ogenzen (http://vbskinworks.com/forum/index.php?styleid=317) Orange-black theme. May be too similar to another site.

Really? What site might that be?

Hahahaha.... No. We don't live in a volcano.

OnlyDev (http://vbskinworks.com/forum/?styleid=344) Another style similar to our own.

Looks too much like LadyP's site; I'd skip this one.

ProWeb (http://vbskinworks.com/forum/index.php?styleid=346) Sort of a neutral toned style

I love it.

Pod (http://vbskinworks.com/forum/index.php?styleid=322) A "tech" looking style

Pretty cool.

Soness (http://vbskinworks.com/forum/index.php?styleid=359) A nice gray scale style.

Uh, no.

I like Pod best....Can't we get something a little more floral?

Apokalupsis
September 4th, 2007, 09:32 AM
Well, the cool thing about our system, is that it allows multiple styles to select from, from the user level. That is, we could have 20 different styles for the site, and members just select from a dropdown box what they want to use at any given time.

The challenges with that...

1) It's a lot of work making sure all the features/mods we have installed work with all the themes.

2) It is expensive if we use pay sites. And Apok isn't made out of money (hence, asking for donations to assist w/ site expenses).

#2 is more of an obstacle than #1. There'd need to be genuine support of the ideas/features/skins for ODN from the community to justify getting all these goodies. When there isn't, I prioritize as I'm the only (or atleast, primary financial contributor). And I personally prefer features over looks.

If people would prefer a specific look, or even just the ability to select from several, I have no problem hookin' it up...but there needs to be shown some financial interest in that specific area, else it defaults to Apok's priority (toys for the site).

There are free skins out there, but not many that are good enough IMO. And I don't want to spend time and energy on a cruddy skin making sure it works w/ all the other features/mods. It needs to be worth the effort.

WHAT DOES ODN LOOK LIKE!?

Sorry. It was the first thing I thought of when I read the thread title. I vote Backslash and for the love of reason, PLEASE do not adopt a style that has bright neon colors. You think I'm cranky now...

Apokalupsis

...Backslash = blue neon!

To me, the most important view is inside the message view. That's always the clincher for me. I like the ones that place natural borders around each message, to set each one off from the rest.

Big Red (http://vbskinworks.com/forum/index.php?styleid=243)
Very nice. The red might wear on me after about six months, and I'd feel like rotating to another color. If they could change every so often, that might spice things up.

360 (http://vbskinworks.com/forum/index.php?styleid=251)
Very nice. I'm partial to green.

Grunged (http://vbskinworks.com/forum/index.php?styleid=333)
Very nice.

Soness (http://vbskinworks.com/forum/index.php?styleid=359)
Very nice.

I think it's all about moods that one prefers, and how different people react to different tones. Perhaps there's no accounting for taste.

I'm wondering the purpose of needing a new skin? I rather like what we have now.
Resistance is futile...

Change is good. Bill Cosby said that without change, there'd be a lot of wet babies.

Sure, why don't you just shoot all of us guys? It would tend to take all the energy out of the anti-homosexual arguments.

Truly words of the wise. :hmm:

I'm not disagreeing that change is good sometimes, Xan. I just believe that...
