Hypothetically... (I LOVE this forum)

You're out for a walk in your local park and you come across a magic lamp. When you rub it, a genie comes out and promises you three wishes. (No, you cannot wish for more wishes.)

What are your three wishes?

The debate is to present your three wishes and detail why they have merit. The goal of the thread is to find the "best" three wishes.

Have at.

1. Never have to sleep
2. Obtain the mental qualities to rule the world (defined as knowledge and wisdom)
3. Obtain the means of ruling the world (popularity, global trust...)

You have to be vague enough to the genie to get several things out of one wish, while not making it too vague that he won't give it to you :)

Wish One: An end to power. I think the fact that the world operates on a scale system where one person is better than another or has more power than another or more money is ridiculous. It is insulting to humans that we need money and power as motivation to accomplish all that we have the ability to accomplish. Essentially, an end to all trading would be one step toward an end to the power struggle, because there would be enough for everyone. There would be no famine, because Kraft Macaroni and Cheese could be mass produced to feed the entire world.

Wish Two: An end to unnecessary dwindling of the world's resources. I would like to see a return to a more naturalistic means of living. If there is a way to drive a car "cleaner" we do it. If there is a way to not destroy the rain forests, do it. More stuff gets recycled and less stuff gets thrown away. We instill in society that kids don't *need* a brand new back pack every school year unless the one they were using is falling apart. We need to build smaller houses in tighter knit communities. No one *really* needs 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. This would be one more step toward world peace, because there would be more awareness of our interconnectedness to the Earth.

Wish Three: A return to the "community" where each person uses their natural gifts and talents to do what nature intended. There was a time when neighbors helped out neighbors, when it took a village to raise a child, where you walked down a street and knew everyone who lived on it, where you made friends face-to-face instead of on a computer screen. I would like to see people doing what they are good at. If one woman is a nurturer and another woman is adept at carpentry, then the nurturer helps out the carpenter by watching her children during the day and the carpenter helps out the nurturer by building her playground equipment. If one man is a great painter, and one is a great mechanic, one one helps the other paint his house and one helps the other fix his car. I would like to see people be more dependent on each other.

I believe that these three wishes would put us on a direct path to achieving world peace. Why I wouldn't just vote for "world peace?" The journey is half the fun. But I would like to remove some of the obstacles and point the people of the world in the right direction.

Mine are nothing big really-

1. Wish for nothing less than omnipotent power with none of the responsabilities
2. Wish to have every genie lamp in the world under my control
3. (Saved for future use)

May whatever god you believe in save you all.......

That PM's glass of cool JC would always be full no matter how much he drank.

That peace and fellowship would permanently decend upon this benighted planet.

That I might be the official sponser to Zhavic being welcomed and baptised into the Roman Catholic faith. Alternatively, that Spart. may sponser Zhav's entry into the Othodox Catholic communion.

I change my second wish so that F&N is able to make these wishes....not a bad one in the bunch!

Hmm. I'm tempted to say things like world peace, but somehow I doubt this djinn would be able to change human nature (not to mention I'd be asking an Arab spirit for peace, and I'm an American). Somehow I just don't like the idea of instantly making any of my problems vanish, just doesn't seem natural or right. So I hope I'd just get rid of it, or give it to someone with good intentions (although we know what road is paved with those).

1)Omnipotence
2)A Turkey sandwich
3)A glass of coke.

The first one eliminates the need for any more wishes, as I could do what I wished with it.

Besides that, I'd wish for infinite wisdom, knowledge, and memory (so that I could remember the awesome hypothetical thread I was going to make, but forgot. I have another, but can't, for the life of me, remember the original.

1) I wish that my state of life was such that I did not need to wish for anything.

(2) & (3)? "hey, you are a genie!"

1) Perfect Wisdom.

(Naturally, I'll reserve my remaining wishes until after the first is granted, at which point I'm sure I'll be able to answer any challenges as to the merit of my choices.)

As perfect wisdom requires perfect knowledge, you would be some kind of 'super dude' Mr. G.

Wow, all questions answered, nothing to argue over. - How boring.

Agreed. Either really boring or really contented, perfect wisdom must be. But I guess things like boredom don't affect an Almighty God. Humans though...we always need something to discover to be happy.

You'll only reach perfect contentment if you can ignore all the scr*w-ups and tragedies your fellow men are involved in. I thought that bit was for apres mort - and the Beatific Vision. (Galendir as the Beatific Vision  ;? :red: !!!!!! - OMG! No I somehow don't think so.)

You only need one wish.

I wish that everything that I write in this notebook to be true, everything that I strike out, to return to it's state before I wrote about it.

Judging from some of your posts, we theist types would have to watch out! You would be fully occupied winkling out Christians (most of Europe) and putting them to 'trial by ordeal' and hanging, drawing and quartering them for 'treason' (which loosely translated into modern jargon meant whatever the 'ruler' wanted it to mean).

As 'proper' rule of law wasn't around then, your head would very likely end up on the block, or you may suffer even worse. As it becomes clear that you are an 'immortal', You would probably then suffer the same fate as one of the abbots of Thornton Abbey in North Lincolnshire - that of being walled up. I hope your perfect health includes psychological resilience.

ps. In 1148 the abbot of Thornton Abbey was Sir Richard de Grethem. He was accused of black magic, witchery and lax (loose or immoral) living. His punishment was to be walled up in the abbey, not far from the high altar. Workmen found his skeleton in the 1830's. He is still supposed to haunt the site. During the Civil War parliamentarian cavalery stabled their horses in the abbey and the troops left a lot of grafitti carved on the walls of the 'gatehouse' which survives in remarkably good condition. The roof area has been closed since a more recent suicide. On one of my visits to the abbey, the caretaker related that during a full moon he saw a small group of scantily clad people in strange headgear (one had antlers) performing a 'ritual' on the site of the high altar, he called the local police and they arrested the group for trespass.

That we could produce a viable and speedy means of finding another planet effectively identical to Earth and get everyone there - in order to start again but this time with what we know now.

That a full and comprehensive understanding of Austrian School economics and social theory could be swiftly and easily shoved into the brains of everyone, rapidly, thus eliminating 99% of all 'government' and bringing propserity and peace and all round wonderfulness (both or either planet)

The elimination of all medical problems, including aging beyond 25, dying and pregnancy - see 'Birth Control'.

With all the above I would have no great need nor desire to rule the world, it would be a wonderful place anyway.

Note how so many of this thread have world domination as a fantasy. I'm figuring they're Americans? ;)

Seriously, most peeps do feel that way - which is why no politician can ever be trusted and 99% of government should be dismantled and never allowed to be rebuilt. You can't trust people, give them any power and they wanna be world dictators. By definition a ruler, to rule, needs power. The power is the power to inflict force, forcing adult people to do what they dont want to do, thus no individual should have such power.

lol @ Pibs...
Those bent on world domination would be the Americans you would NOT want in charge of the military..South Africa might soon be renamed New Texas...

I change my wishes:
1. Unlimited supply of the 100 finest beers in the world, or ownership of a great bar, whichever comes first
2. A magical plate that could produce any food I wished anytime, unlimited quantities
3. The metabolism of a humming bird.

What else could a guy possibly need? :)

Pibs: If you reckon on going to another planet armed with what we know now will solve our plight, I regret you may be disappointed. -Now here is the rub, we would also be going with our human 'FEELINGS AND EMOTIONS', they would be like time bombs just awaiting their opportunity to go off in our newfound 'Garden of Eden'. Rabby Burns had it about right when he referred to those best laid plans of mice and men.

PM: I trust you would not also have the lifespan of the said hummingbird, mind you to be able to fly backwards might be fun.
Having thought for a moment, the hammering you are likely to give your poor old liver would most probably curtail your life by a few decades.

I thought of that, but didn't know how to fit it into my three wishes. If I had unlimited liberty with a wish, the last would state something to the effect of:
Metobolism of a hummingbird, lifespan of an Ent, constitution of an elephant....Perhaps more simply put, the body of a vampire without the blood/sunlight/stake through the heart drawbacks.....

I wouldnt change the other two though! Great food and great beer breeds great friends, cute girls, and good times! Who would want world domination if you could have those 5 things? :)

Problem solved, PM.

Wish one: That you could have as many wishes as you wanted.
Wish two: That you would only wish wise wishes.
Wish three: To be given to F&N as a Christmas pressie.
