At this link: To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 3 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. you will find the story of a plane that crashed in 1950. It turns out the plane crashed pretty close to where I live and Clive Cussler got involved in trying to find the wreckage. 58 people died in the disaster.

I'll get back to this later - my question is why are they still trying to find the wreckage?

Just one note before the topic dies - I find this very strange. If they find these huge plane engines which are supposedly buried in the mud, how will they determine the cause of the crash? Even if they found a huge scorch mark indicating a possible lightning hit, what kind of closure does that bring to the families of the victims? Anyway, the scorch mark coild have been from fuel burning.

The accident happened 55 years ago, yet it beguiles people to this day.

I'm not sure how they would determine the cause of the crash from the engines, but then, I am not an expert. There are people who specialize in determining crash causes in planes, cars, boats, etc. I would guess that lightning would leave a characteristic burn, distinctive from fuel burns, but i don't know.

Snoopy, I wish you wouldn't remind me of just how old I am. I remember DC4s flying into the old airstrip that was Changi Airport in Singapore. It was a dirt runway with some metal matting that went over the road. Vehicles had to stop if the RAF, USAF or civilian aircraft were landing or taking off. It is now a massive International type airport. I believe the old and notorious (Jap occupation) Changi Prison has gone. I even vaguely recall late marques of Spitfires loading up with belts of 20mm ammo and small bombs and rockets, to go and try to find Communist insurgents in the Malayan jungle.
