View Full Version : Where Do You Rank the Most Acclaimed Rock n' Roll Artists?

Xanadu Moo

Here is what one might call the "Super 25," a subjective list of who could be considered those artists critics and hard-core fans seem to revere the most from the history of rock n' roll.

You may respond by copying and pasting from below, and then bolding your responses. I'll compile the results and post them along with a graph in about a week or so. If you are unfamiliar with an artist, that would also qualify as "lower than 100th."

Sorry if I left anyone's favorites out, but it's impossible to please everybody, and you have to break it off somewhere. Remember, these are not necessarily my personal favorites, but those that are deemed to have received heavy acclaim. (Apologies to fans of the Beach Boys, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Pearl Jam, The Cars, Prince, Fleetwood Mac, et al. If there's demand for a part II, I'll gladly take other nominations later.)

Where would you rank each of these artists among musical artists from all pop/rock genres, based on your own personal taste?

This poll only got one reply (me) - that qualifies it for one of the worst polls - doesn't it?

No. It only qualifies it as too much work for anybody but you.

No. It only qualifies it as too much work for anybody but you. Three lousy, measly, microscopic, syncopated, innocuous, fraternal, inchoate, maladjusted, ergonomic, lethargic, inveterate, elementary, doggone, stinkin', unadulterated, erstwhile minutes to fill the dang thing out... It takes almost that long to pick out with which smileys someone wants to litter their post. 'Twas an ambitious poll, but I beg no one judge it historically on its paltry response, for diminutive polls need love too. 'Twas possibly a good primer to see who here, if anyone, is seriously into music of the rock n' roll era. Methinks only Bueller so far.

This isn't easy, because some of bands are great because they were pioneers of Rock and Roll, even though their music wasn't necessarily brilliant. For that, they deserve to be on the list. But musically, they don't compare to some of the later bands who had more talent in the genre.

BEATLES
a. Top 1-3 of all-time
b. Top 4-10 of all-time
c. Top 11-20 of all-time
d. Top 21-50 of all-time
e. Top 51-100 of all-time
f. Lower than 100th

Because they were one of the first "rock n rollers"...even though the blues artists of the 30's, 40's, and 50's, had them beat by decades. Strawberry Fields Forever.

ROLLING STONES
a. Top 1-3 of all-time
b. Top 4-10 of all-time
c. Top 11-20 of all-time
d. Top 21-50 of all-time
e. Top 51-100 of all-time
f. Lower than 100th

Again, because they were one of the first. I think a lot of their music sucks. Yet Honky Tonk woman is one of my all time favorite songs ever.

LED ZEPPELIN
a. Top 1-3 of all-time
b. Top 4-10 of all-time
c. Top 11-20 of all-time
d. Top 21-50 of all-time
e. Top 51-100 of all-time
f. Lower than 100th

I just love Led Zep. They epitomize classic rock.

JIMI HENDRIX
a. Top 1-3 of all-time
b. Top 4-10 of all-time
c. Top 11-20 of all-time
d. Top 21-50 of all-time
e. Top 51-100 of all-time
f. Lower than 100th

Not a big fan. But it's Hendrix.

BOB DYLAN
a. Top 1-3 of all-time
b. Top 4-10 of all-time
c. Top 11-20 of all-time
d. Top 21-50 of all-time
e. Top 51-100 of all-time
f. Lower than 100th

Not a big "folk" fan. I don't think he really changed the face of Rock n Roll much. Talented, but...eh.

PINK FLOYD
a. Top 1-3 of all-time
b. Top 4-10 of all-time
c. Top 11-20 of all-time
d. Top 21-50 of all-time
e. Top 51-100 of all-time
f. Lower than 100th

Originality. No one has come close.

ELVIS PRESLEY
a. Top 1-3 of all-time
b. Top 4-10 of all-time
c. Top 11-20 of all-time
d. Top 21-50 of all-time
e. Top 51-100 of all-time
f. Lower than 100th

Ditto what I said about the Beatles.

ELTON JOHN
a. Top 1-3 of all-time
b. Top 4-10 of all-time
c. Top 11-20 of all-time
d. Top 21-50 of all-time
e. Top 51-100 of all-time
f. Lower than 100th

He's on the list because of stamina. I think he's had a hit every year for 30 years running as of 2002 or something like that. Though not all credit goes to him. If not for what's his name, Elton wouldn't be so famous. Someone Saved My Life Tonight and Empty Garden...two of my favorites.

THE WHO
a. Top 1-3 of all-time
b. Top 4-10 of all-time
c. Top 11-20 of all-time
d. Top 21-50 of all-time
e. Top 51-100 of all-time
f. Lower than 100th

Who? (Hehehe.)

NEIL YOUNG
a. Top 1-3 of all-time
b. Top 4-10 of all-time
c. Top 11-20 of all-time
d. Top 21-50 of all-time
e. Top 51-100 of all-time
f. Lower than 100th

Again with the "folk" sound. Recognize his unique sound, but not rock n roll per se.

THE DOORS
a. Top 1-3 of all-time
b. Top 4-10 of all-time
c. Top 11-20 of all-time
d. Top 21-50 of all-time
e. Top 51-100 of all-time
f. Lower than 100th

They had a unique sound, too, that is indicative of "classic" rock.

GENESIS
a. Top 1-3 of all-time
b. Top 4-10 of all-time
c. Top 11-20 of all-time
d. Top 21-50 of all-time
e. Top 51-100 of all-time
f. Lower than 100th

Stamina. Phil Collins.

U2
a. Top 1-3 of all-time
b. Top 4-10 of all-time
c. Top 11-20 of all-time
d. Top 21-50 of all-time
e. Top 51-100 of all-time
f. Lower than 100th

U2 offered something unique to the 80's. Simply because 80's is in this sentence makes it that U2 does not deserve Top 50 billing.

EAGLES
a. Top 1-3 of all-time
b. Top 4-10 of all-time
c. Top 11-20 of all-time
d. Top 21-50 of all-time
e. Top 51-100 of all-time
f. Lower than 100th

One of my all time favorites to listen to. I know every word to just about every song. Their southern rock sound was original, but they don't get top billing just because of audience appeal. It's gotta be more than that.

R.E.M.
a. Top 1-3 of all-time
b. Top 4-10 of all-time
c. Top 11-20 of all-time
d. Top 21-50 of all-time
e. Top 51-100 of all-time
f. Lower than 100th

They are on the list because why? Again, huge contributors to the 80's and 90's. Not as deserving as that talented musicians of the 60's and 70's.

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN
a. Top 1-3 of all-time
b. Top 4-10 of all-time
c. Top 11-20 of all-time
d. Top 21-50 of all-time
e. Top 51-100 of all-time
f. Lower than 100th

I, personally, can't understand a frickin' word he says. But, I recognize that he made a huge contribution to music.

VAN MORRISON
a. Top 1-3 of all-time
b. Top 4-10 of all-time
c. Top 11-20 of all-time
d. Top 21-50 of all-time
e. Top 51-100 of all-time
f. Lower than 100th

Party song king isn't enough to get him on the list of the tops. I'm a Brown-Eyed Girl. Yay!

DAVID BOWIE
a. Top 1-3 of all-time
b. Top 4-10 of all-time
c. Top 11-20 of all-time
d. Top 21-50 of all-time
e. Top 51-100 of all-time
f. Lower than 100th

I know I should probably rank him a little higher due to his contribution to helping create the "punk" era that pretty much destroyed good music as we knew it in the 70's. Ooops. Nevermind. Really, I know he was artistic. He's just too Iggy for me.

THE MOODY BLUES
a. Top 1-3 of all-time
b. Top 4-10 of all-time
c. Top 11-20 of all-time
d. Top 21-50 of all-time
e. Top 51-100 of all-time
f. Lower than 100th

The fact that they used orchestras to create their music and yet produced uniquely original and spiritual sounds...they are definitly in my top 3.

ERIC CLAPTON
a. Top 1-3 of all-time
b. Top 4-10 of all-time
c. Top 11-20 of all-time
d. Top 21-50 of all-time
e. Top 51-100 of all-time
f. Lower than 100th

I know he's a talented guy. Staying power. Cream made some of my favorites.

a. Top 1-3 of all-time
b. Top 4-10 of all-time
c. Top 11-20 of all-time
d. Top 21-50 of all-time
e. Top 51-100 of all-time
f. Lower than 100th

They epitomize Classic, also. They had a little of glam thing going on. But yet...they still rock n rolled.

RUSH
a. Top 1-3 of all-time
b. Top 4-10 of all-time
c. Top 11-20 of all-time
d. Top 21-50 of all-time

c. Top 11-20 of all-time
d. Top 21-50 of all-time
e. Top 51-100 of all-time
f. Lower than 100th

I, personally, am bored to tears listening to Steely Dan. But they brough Jazz flavor to Classic Rock.

SANTANA
a. Top 1-3 of all-time
b. Top 4-10 of all-time
c. Top 11-20 of all-time
d. Top 21-50 of all-time

f. Lower than 100th

There is no guitar I enjoy dancing to more than Santana guitar. Black Magic Woman. Ugh. Can't even speak.

Staying power. Dream On. The best.

WTF is Rush doing on that list? In fact, that's a REALLY odd list.

You've got Neil Young, but you left off Johnny Cash.

You've got REM and U2, but omitted Elvis Costello.

The Moody Blues & Elton John? On the same list as Elvis & The Beatles? Why not just add Rod Stewart while you're at it?

This is a very strange list.

Some other bands I think deserved to be on the poll include but are not limited to:

Boston
Bad Company
Guns N Roses
Metallica
Fleetwood Mac
Gordon Lightfoot
CCR (I can't even believe you left them off, but put REM on! What's WRONG with you! Hehe.)
STYX (Again...geez, gotta have U2, though. Please.)
Poison (I am SO kidding!)
CSNY (Now...I know you got the Y part in there, but the rest belonged there, too.)
Janis Joplin
Carole King

There's more. But those are the ones off the top of my head.

WTF is Rush doing on that list? In fact, that's a REALLY odd list.

The Moody Blues & Elton John? On the same list as Elvis & The Beatles? Why not just add Rod Stewart while you're at it?

This is a very strange list.
Rush, much like Yes, has had a strong following spanning three decades. They haven't just stuck around for a long time, but have consistently put out solid albums (at least up until the early '90s). Radio play doesn't do either of them justice. Classic rock playlists are very wanting.

Also, R.E.M. and U2 have both had wide critical appeal and massive album sales. And it's hard to argue with Johnny Cash, as you said.

I also did the same poll on a classic rock music site, and these were the results...

38 people voting
(Number of top 1-3 votes shown in parentheses)
Points shown at right

1. Beatles (19) -- 149
2. Led Zeppelin (12) -- 132
3. Pink Floyd (10) -- 128
4. The Who (6) -- 127
5. Rolling Stones (11) -- 125
6. Bob Dylan (9) -- 110
7. Jimi Hendrix (1) -- 106
8. Neil Young (7) -- 104
9. The Doors (1) -- 93
10. Queen (2) -- 87
11. Eric Clapton (2) -- 86
12. David Bowie -- 77
13. Eagles (1) -- 76
14. Elvis Presley (2) -- 71
15. Rush (4) -- 69
16. Elton John -- 68
17. Genesis (1) -- 61
17. The Moody Blues (1) -- 61
17. Santana -- 61
20. Aerosmith -- 57
21. Bruce Springsteen -- 56
22. Van Morrison -- 55
23. U2 -- 50
24. R.E.M. -- 43
24. Steely Dan -- 43

I assigned 5 pts for a vote in the top 1-3, 4 pts. for a vote in the top 4-10, etc.

All 25 artists on the list received at least two top 10 votes.
All 25 artists were voted in the top 100 at least 50% of the time.
The Beatles were the only artist voted in everyone's top 100.
The Who had the highest rate of top 50 votes (92%).
50% of the voters put the Beatles in the top 1-3.

So, Rush and Elton John got some decent support. Rush even had four top-3 votes. The bottom few were basically voted off the island.

Some other bands I think deserved to be on the poll include but are not limited to:
Boston, Bad Company, Guns N Roses, Metallica, Fleetwood Mac, Gordon Lightfoot, CCR, CSNY, Janis Joplin, Carole King
I did apologize in advance for Fleetwood Mac and CCR. On the classic rock site, I followed it up with a secondary poll which included Fleetwood Mac, Beach Boys, The Kinks, Stevie Wonder, Blue Oyster Cult, Steve Miller Band, The Cars, Yes, Talking Heads, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Paul McCartney & Wings, Doobie Brothers, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Dream Theater, Rod Stewart, AC/DC, Prince, The Clash, Alan Parsons Project, Dire Straits, Pearl Jam, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, The Band, and Chicago. I haven't compiled the results from that one yet.

By the way, I had complaints about Elvis Costello not being on the second list.

Hap, that is very unsual to see Guns N' Roses and Gordon Lightfoot mentioned together. I do like Gordon also though.
