Well, guys. As most of you already know. I'm in the process of a divorce and am attempting to become "independent".
I sell my poetry on the side but I am nowhere near making enough to support myself yet. (That day WILL come though). I'm venturing out to look for a job in support of myself and was wondering if I could get any tips or advice on what might help me in regards to interviews, resume, what employers are looking for in their employees now a days, etc.
I've already completed my resume and thought of applying at a "Temp agency" to help me make some money until I can find something I really like and can settle into. Would this be a waste of time do you think?
The last job I worked at was in a chiropractor's office as an office manager about a 1 1/2 ago part time. It was a very small establishment and not much in the way of a career. Previous to that, I worked at a company from 1986 - 1998. I was Executive Assistant to the President of the company and knew all the ins and outs of the company. In fact, so much so that I was the "go to" person there.
My goal for the future is this. I want to find a job that supports me. I'm not much interested in finding a "career" because I would like to continue with my poems as well as be able to eventually open up a small work out club of my own. I know, however, this is something that will take time so although I'm not looking for a career, I do want to find a job that will keep me stimulated mentally and allow me to utilize my professional skills to the fullest.
What are some tips on convincing an employer that I'm the right person for the job and is there anything I can say or do that would let me stand out from the rest of the applicants?

Sylvie - I reccommend Taxi driving. You can tote your laptop around with you (you can even get free wireless in WIFI hotspots), you meet people who can open up doors and you do the community a service. Just ease up on the gas pedal - ok?
P.S. - Tink posted a topic about job hunting: Looking for a job? (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 3 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.) - too bad you aren't politically connected, or are you?
P.P.S. - When you open the work out club, make sure you wear some sexy leotards - it will attract many more customers (men and women) :)

 Good advice Snoop...only problem is it would probably require me working nights which would mean I'd be driving in the DARK!:bad:

Sylje - Are there any jobs in publishing or journalism that you could link into? Be prepared to start at the bottom, but once in, be on the lookout for opportunities. Cub reporting on a local 'rag'/newspaper is often a good first rung to work for.
Push your strengths and don't draw attention to any 'weaknesses' until you have worked on them.
I wish you health, happiness, fulfillment and a few bucks in your 'new' life.

Wow, I never actually considered journalism or newpaper position. I know a friend that is looking into that type of job in the future and boy it would be so awesome to be working in the same field as that person!!! Maybe I could get in a position where I would be able to help that person when the time came. Hmmmm.....thanks Fruity. Certainly something I'll consider!

Syl I have no advice on what you should go after but sell the heck out of yourself at the interview. Don't be arrogant, just really confident! :)

syl; You may be interested into something I just got in to. Ebooks. Rather than attempt to get published as an author (I've been trying for ten years) through traditional methods.
I write "How to" books. (I have only completed one and am about ready to put it out on the web.) The way it works is you find topics that many people are talking about. (google is great for this) Then figure out a way to solve one of many common gripes.
My first ebook, (approximately 50 pages) I will be selling it online only, (no overhead or editors, agents to pay) and I will sell it for the small sum of $2.50. I also will be giving a 30 day money back trial offer.
I wanted to call my ebookd "Self-defense for Dummies" but realized I would have to pay royalties to the person who thought up the term "For dummies". Instead I am titleing it "Self-defense for everyone". It is aimed at what someone who does NOT train in any arts. In fact I only give out a couple of techniques as nearly all of what I wrote is mental and emotional, as well as common sense tips that most people overlook. I may call it "Keep your family safe.". I have a cover page that I will put out that is written to intice the reader to order the ebook. If you'd like to know more about how it is done PM me and I will point you in the right direction........:O)

Oh my gosh, CC....that is such a kind offer. And with you only living about 3 hours from me, I could jog on over to your place and see how you set it up on your computer even....possibly at the ODN meet if we go there. I love the idea! Just have to think about what I would publish.
I would also like to create a website to sell my poems. I would only pick out a couple of ones that have sold very successfully in the gift shops and focus on those to start.
Fruity...I sent my resume to the Sauk Valley Newspaper yesterday. They happened to have an ad in the paper as Administrative Assitant and Editor in the classified's department.
:syl singing: "Just put one foot in front of the otherrrrrr.....and soon you'll be walkin' out the doooooooorrrr!":boogie:
Dang...I just thought of something! I have to go buy work clothes! I don't think they'd appreciate me walking in with blue jeans every day!

I say Phone Sex...those gals have it made. They make bank and never have to get dressed. you have a boss but only for about 15 min, and you don't like them...hang up on their perverted tussy. Yeah, I'd rent Girl 6 first.

Excellent call, Mistress! I once witnessed a woman who could hardly fit into a phone booth taking a call there for phone sex. It was hilarious.
"I'm about 5'6" red hair, green eyes, 38-23-34 and I work out all the time..."
If I wasn't such a prude I'd do it myself!
As for Sylje...Apply for everything under the sun, but only accept a job where you like the people and the company. That is more important than what you do. Think about it. I would rather work for a company that hauls trash that is full of good people than work for a Law Firm with bad people. Go where the good people are. Don't get too hung up on what the job is.
