View Full Version : The Greatest Stories You Never Wrote

I always have a few ideas kicking around my head for a story or two that I know I'll never write, or don't have the ability to write. How 'bout you?

One idea that I thought would be cool would be a story told from the point of view of a zombie. Not like a comedy, but trying to show the deep emotional changes that would drive someone on a mad search for brains.

Not like a comedy, but trying to show the deep emotional changes that would drive someone on a mad search for brains. That was done already - the Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz.

I once had a brilliant idea to make a bio-pic about Aquaman. I tried to pawn it off on Stephen King and got a postcard from his publicist: "no thanks, he has enough ideas".

The stories I think of are mostly erotic and I don't write them because I'd probably be banned.

Well there's always that. :)

Another stoery of mine: the origins series, which I started a while back. It involves a futuristic war. It's WWIII where the totalitarian, US semi-theocracy wages war on the rest of the world. The story follows one group of soldiers fighting for the Armies of Secular Resistance. Since they are fighting a mostly guerilla war, they must take on code names such as "Fyshhed", "F&N", "Apok", etc. But I just never have time to work on this story. It spawned off of my bio for KB, where the evil high counsel, several hundred years after the war, attempts to send back it's agent (KB) to subvert the rebellion.

You really should start writing more Iluv. I loved your recent story in the writing forum. Which, BTW, you never revealed what the name stood for. ;)

Name=revealed. :)

And I need to write more?! Someone go beat up Hyde. I keep reading these snippets of ridiculously cool stories, but they never get followed up, or concluded!

OH GOODY!

And I need to write more?! Someone go beat up Hyde. I keep reading these snippets of ridiculously cool stories, but they never get followed up, or concluded!

I'm working on that with him. ;)

Hyde is a kick ass story writer. He's going to be an award winner or best seller one of these days. YOU MARK MY WORDS!!!!

It's showbiz ma man. Showbiz. Always leave em wantin more. ;)

Plus it's that I never do an outline, so after a little ways in, when one SHOULD be used, I never have one, so I stop writing.

Ah, I've been there. More often for me, though, I have too much of an outline, and I have the story planned out to every detail. Then it's no fun to actually write it, so I never do. :(

I have done a few bits of writing that I rate, and a lot more that I don't. I particularly remember one I wrote of a past experience in Hong Kong in the present tense with vistas, smells and feelings enfolding before me in 'real time'.

There is another darker and more cerebral piece of reflection that I undertook during what I refer to as my 'black dog' or 'dark night of the soul' time about 10 years ago.

An English prof. at my uni asked if he could see them and commented that they were easily good enough to publish. Perhaps I might one day, then perhaps I might not.

I am slowly building up a 'portfolio' of stuff, some of which is done in a stream of consciousness style. I like tinkering with styles and techniques in poetry and prose, including that tricky one to master - in medias res:

IN MEDIAS RES : Technical term for the epic convention of beginning "in the middle of things," rather than at the very start of the story. In the Odyssey, for example, we first learn about Odysseus' journey when he is held captive on Calypso's island, even though, as we find out in Books IX through XII, the greater part of Odysseus' journey actually precedes that moment in the narrative. Of course, films and written tales often begin in the thick of things and fill in the background later; in other words, narrative regularly reworks discursively the simple chronology of its story.

Iluvatar - I find that my best stuff seems to come out of just kicking off with a 'title' or basic idea and seeing were mood and inspiration takes me. I realise that if you have a lot of sub-plots and characters some basic notes of just where things are 'at' can be essential.

The stories I think of would probably work better visually on the big screen than in the written word. Also, I think good acting comes through better in movies than it does in novels. Some caricatures are so well done that no explanation could do them justice.

But then, there are so many aspects of the written word which trump depiction in real life, that the imagination of the reader has great powers. Both have their plusses and minuses.

One story I've thought about was a story of about thirty different isolated main characters that you see interspersed throught the movie for only a few minutes at a time, but they end up crossing the paths of all the other different main characters at various points in the movie even though none of them know each other, and then it all ties in at the end somehow. I'll bet that happens in real life more than we realize. People we know also know other people we know, but we never find out about it unless a specific topic of discussion comes up.

I'd also like to see a movie that has all of the following actors/actresses, many with speaking parts, and others as extras.

Denzel Washington
John Cusack
Hilary Swank
Aidan Quinn
Eric Stoltz
Johnny Depp
Aaron Eckhart
Helen Hunt
Alan Rickman
Bill Paxton
Will Smith
Robert Duvall
Nicole Kidman
Dylan McDermott
Liam Neeson
John Malkovich
Jennifer Connelly
Gillian Anderson
David Duchovny
Jim Belushi
Anthony Michael Hall
Uma Thurman
Salma Hayek
Jack Black
Tom Hanks
Alan Arkin
Mel Gibson
Sean Connery
Matthew MacConaughey
Jamie Lee Curtis
Val Kilmer
Kevin Costner
Olympia Dukakis
Mira Sorvino
Richard Dreyfuss
Jeff Bridges
Winona Ryder
Judd Nelson
Bruce Willis
Morgan Freeman
Jeff Goldblum
Kevin Spacey
Griffin Dunne
Rob Morrow
Ed Harris
Mandy Patinkin
Richard Gere
Nicolas Cage
Michael Caine
Gilbert Gottfried
Wesley Snipes
Russell Crowe
Jim Carrey
John Turturro
Gwyneth Paltrow
Keanu Reeves
Julia Ormond
Anthony Hopkins
Harrison Ford
Sam Shepard
Meg Ryan
Billy Crystal
William Hurt
Jodi Foster
Tim Robbins
Bill Murray
Minnie Driver
Arnold Schwarzeneggar
Holly Hunter
Kevin Bacon
Michael Keaton
Joan Cusack
Samuel L. Jackson
Robert Loggia
John Travolta
Gene Hackman
Jack Nicholson
Robert DeNiro
Al Pacino
Robert Downey Jr.

If they were still alive:
Gregory Peck
Robert Mitchum
Grace Kelly
Burt Lancaster
John Candy
John Belushi

It would be fun making roles for each of them.

Give the reins to Ron Howard or Quinton Tarantino, and it would be a killer movie at 3 hours long.

People I would keep out of the movie so they wouldn't hog the scenes:

Tom Cruise
Julia Roberts
Dennis Quaid
Danny Glover
Brad Pitt
Steve Martin
Ben Affleck
Angelina Jolie
Demi Moore
Sylvester Stallone
George Clooney
Emilio Estevez
Charlie Sheen
Martin Sheen

Snoop - I love that film. So much acting and comedic talent. So true of the quirks and incompetences of we humans. I have even met most of those character types in real life.
