    Question Clinton for UN Secretary?

I don't think he is interested but the possibility is interesting. That link didn't work (I just fixed it) - here's the same basic article from almost two years ago: http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/trib.../s_118230.html

"There are reports that Bill Clinton already has lined up support for his candidacy from Germany, France, England, Ireland and New Zealand. A handful of African states, led by Nigeria, are rooting for Bill. And Hillary has brought in Morocco and Egypt. The Russians have let it be known that they would not object to Clinton as the next secretary-general, and the Chinese love Bill almost as much as Monica did."

Let me be the first to say he will not consider the position until after Hillary decides on her plans for '08 - otherwise there could be a conflict of interest.

The U.N. is worthless, and if Slick Willy joins it, then I will just want us out of it that much more.

Kevin - worthless is so unobjective. Why disband the UN? What purpose would it serve?

I don't care if it stays together after we leave, but we need to get out of it. It's ineffectual, discriminatory to America and Israel, and its leader and his family have recently been stealing billions of dollars from us. Doesn't sound like a very worthwhile membership to me.

Kevin - if we leave the UN then they are fairly much restricted to where we allow them to participate in the world. Is that democratic? Is that desireable?

Is it democratic or desirable for the U.N. to hold cute little polls voting America and Israel as the top world security threats, while they leave it to us to enforce their own resolutions, while their peacekeepers are off raping African women? The U.N. has gone the way of the League of Nations, and it's really sad and laughable that it still even exists.

Picture a world without the UN - no more UNICEF, no more coordinated relief efforts, no more peacekeeping missions, no concensus of world opinion .....

Tthe raping of women cannot be considered in this case - that occurs within our own military ranks.

    Re: Clinton for UN Secretary?

In many ways the UN is still a force for good in the world. However, it clearly needs reforms, particularly the Security Council. A system by which vetoes are flung around left, right and centre is not beneficial to anyone. The consent of the US should not be required if the people of the EU feel Israel deserves sanctions, and it is ridiculous that countries like France and Russia should have the final say on matters of US or British national security.

Regarding Clinton for UN Secretary General, I first heard this idea proposed by Bill O'Reilly, and it sounds like a good one. Slick Willy appears perfectly suited for this type of role.
No free man shall be seized or imprisoned, or stripped of his rights or possessions, or outlawed or exiled, or deprived of his standing in any other way, nor will we proceed with force against him, or send others to do so, except by the lawful judgement of his equals or by the law of the land.

    Re: Clinton for UN Secretary?

Think Kevin. The United States needs the world. The UN is a voluntary union of nations. If we continue to act in our own interests without the UN, we are far more likely to be treated as a world military threat (and I assure you, the rest of the world could take us). On the off chance that we forcefully took over places like the Middle East (because to you, apparently "freedom" does not include "freedom to dislike the US.") then we would do what? Move on to Europe? Try for China or Russia? Bother with Africa?

What point is there in NOT being part of an international voluntary union?
Fortunately, the darkest of darkness is not as terrible as we fear.
Unfortunately, the lightest of light, all things good, are not so wonderful as we hope for them to be.
What, then, is left, but various shades of grey neutrality? Where are the heroes and villains? All I see are people.

Yes, the UN has flaws, but nations would still consider the US and Israel security risks if the UN didn't exist. While it is ineffectual in some areas because of competing interests (which tends to block unanimous resolution), the UN enhances diplomacy and provides aid in other ways than militarily. The idea the the US and Israel are threats stems from our power and past and current actions. Israel has been a hotbed of violence and they have nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction. While we attack Iraq for possessing them, we support Israel. Why? Because they are an ally. We have a history of demolishing governments, even democratic ones, and we don't really have anyone to check our power in doing so. If you were a foreign leader, would you not feel threatened? The UN is a flawed organization; there is no doubt of that, but it is still a helpful organization and with our membership it is a stronger force for good.
