If we had the technology to eliminate sleep

If we had the technology to eliminate our need of sleep,

do you think we would be able to handle it?

My first thought was: Yes, more time for myself and for everything i want to do, but couldn't. (I hate sleeping) (but also, i hate waking up)

But of course, it's not that black and white.

With more hours of human activity, we will definitely need more resources, which will result in -

    1) More stress on the Earth's resources
    2) More need for produve, resulting in more work hours a day, maybe all the new found hours would become working hours. Everyone would be doing two shifts daily.
    3) Stress levels will increase because of the constant woring. (Unless there's already the technology to eliminate stress)

Please post your views, I look forward to them!

If we eliminate sleep we also eliminate dreams. Sometimes I find my dreams more interesting that my waking life.

Yeah, lol. I know what you meant.
There was a time i used to look forward to dreaming.

But there comes a time in every man's life (Theme Schindler's List) where reality takes over the fantasies. (Theme from inception)

Why on earth would you want to get rid of sleep?

Also, not likely possible. Sending information from our short term to our long term memory doesn't really work unless we're unconscious.

If hypothetically we had the technology to eliminate sleep and still function the way we do. In essence, take a pill which does all the REM and whatever sleep is necessary for.

Well you would be able to get a lot more done. Then again, sometimes sleep feels so good.

Hmm, interesting, do you know of any reading material on this?

Re: If we had the technology to eliminate sleep

I turn into a total monster when I didn't have enough sleep. And I love sleeping way too much.

It is not a good idea.

If we eliminated our need for sleep, wouldn't that give us the ability to handle not sleeping?

I would prefer not to sleep, as long as I still achieved the physical and mental recovery aspects of sleep.
