Man defends home, possibly facing charges?

Obviously there are some significant missing parts to this story, but on the face of it, I see no reason he should be charged with anything. Love seeing stories of gangbangers getting killed off.

When four gangbangers forced their way into one family’s home in Las Cruces, New Mexico, they met with a trained MMA fighter who defended his fiance and their 2-year old child with deadly force.

Joseph Torrez had been threatened by 22-year-old Leonard Calvillo over the phone after an altercation on New Year’s Day.

“I’m big Eastside,” Calvillo reportedly said, referring to a gang. ” … I’ll kill you and your family … I will go to your house.”

The Garces brothers, along with Avalos and Calvillo are gang members, DASO spokeswoman Kelly Jameson said. Court records show numerous prior arrests and convictions for them, many on drug and violence charges.

Leonard arrived with the 20-year-old Nathan Avalos, and the Garces brothers, and banged loudly on the door of Joseph’s mobile home at about 2 a.m. in the morning. His fiance tried to keep them out by putting all her weight on the door, but to no avail.

That’s when they encountered Torrez, a 155-pound lightweight MMA fighter, who fiercely defended his family. One of the assailants had brought a crude shank, and another grabbed a knife from the home.

Somehow during the scuffle, 25-year old Sal Garces was stabbed to death. The other men ran off, but were captured by local deputies. Avalos was taken to the hospital with severe facial injuries, and another suffered minor injuries. Torrez suffered only minor injuries, and no one else in the home was hurt.

An early report quoted authorities as saying Torrez would not be charged with the murder since he had killed the man out of self-defense. However, a later report has police investigating to possibly charge him. The family has quickly moved out of the mobile home since the event, according to neighbors.

If the events happened as reported, Torrez should be celebrated for defending his family, not charged with murder.

The police have a duty to investigate the crime. The article doesn't say he is being charged...yet. If the actual events were anything like the story being reported he should get a medal. However, when it comes to news, the media rarely get it right.
