Major Update on ODN Policies
Apr 28, 2008 - 8:54 AM - by Apokalupsis
The Rules Page has been updated to reflect the changes, however for your convenience, the specific changes will be posted here in this thread.

Updated Rules

1. Clarification of what constitutes a flame (not really a new rule)

Notice that terms like "fundie", "neocon", "leftie", "homophobe" are all terms that are defined by someone's views or attitudes. They are treated more leniently because ODN is after all a place where we attack each other's opinions and beliefs, and often such attacks degenerate into disparaging descriptions of each other's beliefs. However, persistent usage of such terms to offend members and provoke flames will garner you a trolling infraction.

On the other hand, terms like "idiot", "d-bag", "a-hole", "rapist" all attack a person's fundamental traits and character. While "rapist" ostensibly describes a particular... [Read More]

Updates #2
Apr 06, 2008 - 10:10 AM - by Apokalupsis
Time for another update of features.

1) Thread Prefixes - Predefined prefix tags that users can select from a dropdown list. We use prefixes in our Socrates Cafe and a few other specialty forums. We'll now be able to use them universally dependent upon the forum being used. This will further "breakdown" or categorize threads w/i a specific forum.

This feature needs your help! I've created a few prefixes to be used in the Religion Forum (God:, Faith:, Christianity:, Islam), but we have many forums that could benefit from this feature. I need your input as to what some good... [Read More]

Updates #1
Apr 03, 2008 - 4:51 PM - by Apokalupsis
This is the first in a few announcements explaining some of the features that are now available to our community with the recent updating of the boards. With all the new features we have now and will be having very soon, I thought it best to break them down in more "digestible" chunks rather than one verbose thread. Feel free to discuss/ask questions in this thread.

1) Thread tagging - sort of like our links list, or our gallery. Tags can be added when creating a new thread, or to an existing thread by any user (with appropriate permissions).

Users will be able to click on a selectable tag to bring up any related thread that has the same tag. This is a popular feature that many blogs and other sites use. It's finally going to be offered here at ODN.

New Forum!
Mar 31, 2008 - 8:15 AM - by Dionysus
In an effort to continually improve the content of this site, as well as maintaining the high-quality levels of discussion we've all come to enjoy here, the staff of ODN has found it neccessary to re-visit our standards for discussion and debate - specifically, our standards for opening posts.

Very often we see thread created that are supported by nothing more than an article. While many of these articles have indeed blossomed into full-on debates, when we considered that two of are primary standards for discussion are:
  • Support your argument (which means that, at a minimum, the poster must make an argument) and
  • No linkwarz (which means that simply posting links as an argument is not acceptable
It became apparent to us that allowing members to simply post a link and/or a copy and paste the entire article itself, we were in fact making a compromise on both of the rules above.

A a result of this discovery, a new discussion... [Read More]
